One cannot underestimate the value of the two lexicons, nor the time that one will save in looking up individual words in the Greek NT and the Hebrew OT. The base package already has a tremendous amount of resources, but I recommend buying at least two of the add-on modules that are available: BDAG and HALOT. Here’s a screen shot of the BibleWorks diagrams of 1 Corinthians 9:1-2: If you don’t like those, you can use the diagramming module to create your own. BibleWorks also includes a New Testament Diagram Database which includes sentence diagrams of the entire Greek New Testament. Other important primary texts in the base package include the works of Josephus and Philo, the Aramaic Targums on the OT, the Peshitta, the Vulgate, and the Apostlic Fathers. Nearly every English Bible version is included in the base package, as are Bible versions for more than 26 modern languages.

All of these versions are fully lemmatized and parsed. Not only does it have the standard critical texts of the Old and New Testaments (Nestle-Aland 28th and Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia, respectively), but it also has several other Greek editions of the NT (including Westcott-Hort and Tischendorff) and Rahlf’s text of the Septuagint. BibleWorks includes a graphic interface for morphologically/syntactically complex searches.īibleWorks has a wide range of valuable databases in its base package. The BibleWorks interface is laid out in this order (search-browse-analysis) so that reading and analyzing search results is more intuitive. When researching a particular topic, one usually moves from searching, to browsing, to analysis of particular words or phrases. The three columns are designed to be user-friendly to the researcher. The three-column interface of BibleWorks is a key to why it works so well (screenshot below):

And the searches are lightning fast-faster than any other software I’ve seen.ģ. It also allows readers to perform morphologically and syntactically complex searches in the original languages. BibleWorks allows readers to perform a search on any word or phrase in scripture. One of the reasons that BibleWorks stays open on my computer almost all the time is its speed. This focus on primary texts is what makes the program absolutely essential for serious students of scripture.Ģ. The program is designed for in-depth analysis of the Greek and Hebrew scriptures, not only in digital texts but also in a vast database of images of actual ancient manuscripts. The focus of BibleWorks is not to collate a vast library of books and commentaries. For that reason, I use it all the time, especially because I travel a lot and need the portability. Logos focuses its software on building out a vast digital library. I use them both because they both kind of focus on different things. Sometimes people wonder why I would use BibleWorks instead of the more well known Logos. Why am I so high on this software? There are several reasons:ġ.

That is why I urge you serious students of scripture to purchase a copy before it becomes unavailable on June 15. I have used this tool so much and for so long, I can hardly believe that it is about to be no longer available. That is why I was so sad to read the news today that BibleWorks has decided to cease operations as a provider of Bible software tools. For me, losing this software would be like losing a limb. I use this software not only in my private study but also in nearly all of my college courses. If you walk into my study at any given time of the day, you will find that there is one program that is almost always open on my computer- BibleWorks.
